See the Difference

Put on a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses and something interesting happens. The glare disappears. Colours become richer. Details become clearer. And the world can suddenly look remarkably vivid.

adobestock_2065823973.webp

That’s because Maui Jim isn’t simply a fashion sunglasses brand.

It was built around lens technology.

Born on the beaches of Maui, the company developed its PolarizedPlus2® lens technology to tackle intense glare and UV while preserving — and enhancing — the beautiful colours of the Hawaiian landscape.

At Farmilo Optometrist, we’re proud to stock a carefully selected collection of Maui Jim sunglasses in Leicester. And this is one brand where we’d strongly encourage you to do something before deciding whether you like them:

Look through the lenses.

Born on the Beaches of Maui

The Maui Jim story began in Hawaii. In the 1980s, sunglasses were being sold on Ka’anapali Beach in Lahaina, Maui. There was plenty of sunshine. Plenty of reflected glare. And plenty of beautiful colour. But conventional sunglasses presented a problem.

Darkening everything could reduce brightness, but it didn’t necessarily deal effectively with reflected glare — and some lenses could leave the world looking dull and muted.

Maui Jim set out to develop something better. The result became:

Why Polarisation Matters

And it remains at the heart of Maui Jim today. When sunlight hits surfaces such as:

some of that light can become strongly reflected towards your eyes. This reflected glare can be uncomfortable and distracting. A polarised lens contains a filter designed to reduce much of this reflected glare. The difference can be dramatic. Particularly when you’re driving or near water.

But Maui Jim wanted to do more than simply reduce glare.

PolarizedPlus2®

Maui Jim’s proprietary PolarizedPlus2® technology combines polarisation with UV protection and colour-enhancing lens technology. The lenses are designed to:

So instead of simply making the world darker, Maui Jim aims to make outdoor vision better.

Don't Just Make the World Darker

This is one of the biggest differences between an ordinary dark sunglass lens and a high-quality polarised lens. Darkness alone isn’t necessarily what makes sunglasses good. The objective is to control light intelligently. You want to reduce uncomfortable brightness. Reduce glare. Protect against UV.

Maintain useful contrast. And still see the world naturally. That’s why Maui Jim’s lens technology is the real story behind the brand.

Colour You Have to See

It’s difficult to explain Maui Jim properly without letting somebody look through the lenses. Take the sunglasses off. Look outside. Put them back on. Look again. You’ll often immediately notice a difference. Blue skies can appear richer. Green foliage more defined. Water more vivid.

And distracting reflected glare can be substantially reduced. It’s one of those products where a demonstration is far more convincing than a specification sheet.

Don't take our word for it. Look through them.

100% UV Protection

Good sunglasses aren’t only about comfort. They’re also about protection. Maui Jim lenses block 100% of UVA and UVB radiation. That’s important because ultraviolet exposure accumulates over a lifetime. When choosing sunglasses, we therefore don’t believe you should have to choose between:

Style. Visual comfort. And UV protection. A quality sunglass lens should address all three.

Particularly Good for Driving

Polarised sunglasses can be particularly useful behind the wheel. Bright sunlight can create distracting reflections from:

By reducing reflected glare, polarised lenses can make daytime driving much more visually comfortable.

Maui Jim’s combination of polarisation, colour and contrast makes the collection particularly worth considering if you spend significant time driving in bright conditions.

Polarised lenses aren’t appropriate for every visual situation or every electronic display, so we’ll discuss this with you if relevant.

Made for Life Around Water

Maui Jim’s Hawaiian heritage makes perfect sense when you use the lenses around water. Water can produce intense reflected glare. Whether you’re:

polarisation can make a substantial difference to visual comfort. Reduce the reflected glare and suddenly you can see much more clearly.

Different Lens Colours for Different Needs

Not everybody wants the world to look the same through their sunglasses. Maui Jim offers different lens colours designed to create different visual experiences. Depending on the frame and lens combination, options can include some of Maui Jim’s best-known lens colours.

Neutral Grey

A great choice for bright, direct sunlight. Grey provides strong light reduction while maintaining relatively natural colour perception.

HCL® Bronze

A warmer lens that can work particularly well in changing or variable conditions. It can enhance contrast while giving the world a warmer appearance.

Maui Rose®

A distinctive rose-toned lens designed to provide enhanced contrast and visual comfort.

Maui HT™

Designed for situations where you still want glare reduction but don’t necessarily need the darkness of a conventional sunglass lens. The right choice depends on where and how you’ll use your sunglasses.

Which tint do you like?

The Right Lens for Your Lifestyle

We’ll ask how you actually use your sunglasses. Are they mainly for:

Driving? Holidays? Golf? Walking? Fishing? Cycling? Everyday wear? Bright Mediterranean sunshine? Variable British weather? Different lens colours and materials can suit different situations. Choosing sunglasses shouldn’t simply mean:

It should also mean:

“Which lens works best for what you actually do?”

Maui Jim Prescription Sunglasses

One of the most important benefits for our patients is that many Maui Jim sunglasses can also be supplied with prescription lenses.

That means you don’t necessarily have to choose between clear vision and Maui Jim’s sunglass technology. Depending on your prescription and the particular frame, prescription options may be available for:

We’ll check your prescription and the frame you’ve chosen to determine the appropriate options.

Your Prescription. Maui Jim Technology.

This is where buying Maui Jim through an optician becomes particularly valuable. A prescription sunglass isn’t simply a fashion accessory with prescription lenses fitted into it. We need to consider:

Getting those details right matters. Especially with more wrapped or technically designed frames.

Lens Materials Matter Too

Maui Jim offers different lens materials across its collection. These can provide different balances of:

The best material isn’t automatically the same for everybody.

Someone choosing lightweight everyday sunglasses may have different priorities from someone who wants exceptional optical performance or a more active sports frame.

We’ll help you understand the options rather than expecting you to decipher lens specifications yourself.

More Than Sports Sunglasses

Some people still associate high-performance polarised sunglasses primarily with fishing, sailing or sport. Maui Jim has moved far beyond that. The collection includes a wide variety of styles:

So you don’t have to look like you’re about to enter a sailing competition to benefit from the lens technology. You can choose the frame that suits your style and still enjoy the optics behind it.

Finding the Right Fit

Sunglasses need to fit properly. Particularly if you’re going to wear them for hours at a time. We’ll consider:

Some Maui Jim styles are also designed around different facial contours and bridge profiles, helping us find a better fit for a wider range of faces.

Why Buy Maui Jim From an Optician?

You can buy sunglasses from plenty of places. But we’re opticians. So we’re going to look at them slightly differently. Of course we’ll help you find something that looks good. But we’ll also consider:

Because sunglasses are still eyewear. And the quality of what you’re looking through matters just as much as the logo on the side.

Maui Jim Quality

Maui Jim has built its reputation around specialist sunglass technology and backs its eyewear with aftercare. The brand provides a two-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use.

Replacement nose pads and temple-tip components may also be available through Maui Jim’s support service for appropriate models. We’ll always advise you on the relevant aftercare for your particular frame.

From Maui to Kering Eyewear

Maui Jim’s story began as an independent Hawaiian sunglass specialist. In 2022, Maui Jim became part of Kering Eyewear, the specialist eyewear division of luxury group Kering.

Despite that change in ownership, Maui Jim retains the distinctive identity and lens technology that made the brand famous. For us, that’s still the reason to stock it. Not simply the name.

The lenses.

Who Is Maui Jim For?

Maui Jim is particularly worth trying if you:

You don’t need to understand the technology before you try them. Just look through the lenses.
