Night Lenses · also known as Ortho-K

Wake up. Take out your lenses. See clearly all day.

Specially designed lenses you wear while you sleep. Remove them in the morning and, for suitable patients, enjoy clear unaided vision throughout the day.

For short-sightedness (myopia). Ask us whether your prescription is suitable.

No glasses

Clear vision without reaching for your glasses.

No daytime contact lenses

Your lenses come out when you wake up.

Nothing on your eyes

While you're working, exercising or going about your day.

How do Night Lenses work?

They work while you sleep

Short-sightedness occurs when light entering the eye focuses in front of the retina rather than directly on it. Night Lenses are individually designed to temporarily change the shape of the cornea while you sleep.

01

Pop them in at bedtime

Specially designed rigid contact lenses, fitted to the individual shape of your eyes.

02

Sleep normally

Overnight, they gently and temporarily reshape the front surface of your eye (the cornea) to correct short-sightedness.

03

See clearly all day

Remove them when you wake up. No glasses, no daytime contact lenses.

The effect isn’t permanent. Your cornea gradually returns towards its original shape if you stop wearing the lenses, which is why Night Lenses need to be worn regularly to maintain clear daytime vision.

Extensive experience

Night Lenses aren’t something we simply dabble in

At Farmilo Optometrist, we have extensive experience fitting Night Lenses for patients of different ages, prescriptions and lifestyles. Night Lenses require considerably more precision than conventional contact lenses.

We use Medmont corneal topography, highly regarded for precision corneal mapping and widely used in specialist contact lens and orthokeratology fitting. It produces a detailed map of the surface of your cornea before we fit your lenses. This helps us:

We repeat these measurements at your follow-up appointments and compare the maps over time. For Night Lenses, precision matters.

Who are they good for?

Freedom from glasses and daytime contact lenses

Night Lenses can be an excellent option for people who want to see clearly without anything on their face or in their eyes during the day.

Swimmers

No contact lenses exposed to swimming-pool or open-water environments: your vision has been corrected overnight.

Triathletes & endurance athletes

Swimming. Cycling. Running. Train or compete without glasses that slip and steam up, or lenses that get uncomfortable.

Football, rugby & other sports

Nothing on your face to slip, steam up or get knocked, and no daytime contact lens sitting on your eye.

People who don’t get on with daytime lenses

Because Night Lenses are removed in the morning, your eyes are lens-free throughout the day.

People who spend all day at screens

Work throughout the day without glasses or daytime contact lenses.

Not sure if they’re right for you?

Your prescription is only one part of the decision. A Night Lens assessment tells us for certain.

Real people, real results

“Night lenses changed my life”

Night Lenses have been used successfully for many years. Hear from two athletes who wear them.

Catriona Morrison

Multi world champion · Duathlon

Bronze medal at the World’s at long distance Triathlon (3.8k swim, 180km bike, 42km run) and winner of various Ironman events around the world. Catriona retired in 2015 and has since put her energy into youth projects.

Overall, yes. Any sport where you sweat, you rub your face and your eyes. If you’re a contact lens wearer you risk dislodging the lens. Sports glasses feel sweaty and can steam or smear. All I do now is put one lens in and take one lens out. All done. Nothing in my eyes for the rest of the day and the race. Why wouldn’t you want to control the uncontrollable?
Sport is a part of life. Night lenses, for me, revolutionised my life as they revolutionised my sport experience.
Perhaps only if I wasn’t being physically active. But then I’ll always be active. Night lenses are one set of lenses per year versus throwing away a pair every day. For anyone more attuned to sustainability and the environment, that might also be a plus point. Less waste.

Dr Euan Speirits

Surgeon · Downhill mountain bike champion

A Scottish surgeon with a specialist interest in Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine and Biomechanical Research. In his spare time he is an Elite 4X and Downhill Mountain Bike Racer (Scottish Mountain Biking ‘Hero of the Year’ 2017).

I’ve been wearing them for 3-4 years. I was put onto them by Scott Brown, a fellow MTB who is an optician. I was wearing monthly lenses at the time. The problem with MTB and monthlies is they dry out and when mud hits them it compromises them. Daily lenses dried out quicker, so they were no better. At work when I operated on people my eyes were getting very dry in theatre. I had entertained the idea of laser eye surgery, but was worried about the cost and permanence of it. Night lenses sounded like a pretty good resolution without permanence.
I couldn’t recommend them enough. Everyone at some point wearing daytime lenses has had them move in their eye and felt the ‘grate’. The knowledge that you don’t have that in high performance sport is a huge difference. No compromise. Your vision is your own.
Children and teenagers

Clear vision at school, and slower myopia progression

Night Lenses aren’t just about freedom from glasses. For suitable children, they can correct short-sightedness during the day while also helping to slow the progression of myopia, so a child can enjoy clear vision throughout the school day without glasses or contact lenses.

This can be particularly appealing for children involved in:

For children undergoing myopia management at Farmilo, we also monitor the physical growth of their eyes using axial length measurements with our Topcon MYAH: objective information about how their eyes are developing, rather than relying solely on changes in their glasses prescription.

Are Night Lenses safe?

Night Lenses have been used successfully for many years, but they are still contact lenses and are worn while you sleep. Good hygiene and appropriate professional monitoring are therefore essential.

Overnight contact lens wear carries a risk of eye infection, including microbial keratitis, which can occasionally be serious. That’s why we carefully assess suitability, teach you how to handle and clean your lenses correctly and arrange regular follow-up appointments. We’ll also explain exactly what symptoms to look out for and when you should stop wearing your lenses and contact us.

Am I suitable?

Night Lenses work particularly well for many people with low to moderate short-sightedness, but your prescription is only one part of the decision. We also consider:

Our detailed Medmont corneal mapping allows us to assess your individual eyes before recommending treatment.
